New Delhi:  The Congress party has made it clear that it will project a CM candidate for UP Assembly elections although the party has clarified that Rahul Gandhi is a national leader and there is no question of him being declared as the CM candidate.

The newly appointed state in charge of UP, Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that the party will project a chief ministerial candidate who is capable of carrying everybody along.

"Uttar Pradesh chief minister will be announced at the appropriate time. Rahul Gandhi is our national leader and there is no question of him being made a chief minister," Azad said on Monday.

When asked as to when the Congress will announce the name, Azad said that the party will name the CM face in this elections only although it’s not going to happen immediately.

, “Not immediately… in this election only. Not next election,” Azad said.

Earlier, media reports had suggested that Prashant Kishore who is now strategising the election campaign of Congress party in UP had suggested the names of either Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi as the CM candidate of the party in upcoming Assembly elections.

In case neither of these two faces is available then Prashant Kishore had reportedly pitched for a Brahmin as the CM candidate.

Azad, however, said that speculation on caste of the CM candidate was meaningless.

“It is not a question of Brahmin or Rajput or Muslim or Dalit or backward or forward. The question is one who can carry everybody. When the party is strong and in order… then it doesn’t matter who leads that party,” Azad was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
