Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who recently joined the Congress, today filed his nomination papers for the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls from Amritsar East constituency.

Accompanied by his wife Navjot Kaur and scores of supporters, Sidhu arrived at the electoral office in the afternoon. Speaking to reporters after filing his papers, Sidhu reiterated that he wants to fight for welfare of Punjab people and vowed to expose Badals who are in power from last 10 years.

I feel Punjab which is presently facing a debt of Rs 1, 86, 000 crore because of the ruling party’s unattentiveness.

“I have no personal agenda. I am not contesting election for career reasons, just want Punjab to get direction. I also don’t want any position,” he said.

“I have no personal fight against anyone, just want youth to walk on the right path. It was important for me to come into the system and fight,” he added.

Appealing to the people of the state to vote Congress to power, he said, “I want to tell Punjabi that vote for Punjab, vote to re-establish the law and order situation here.”

In the outgoing Assembly, his wife, a BJP MLA, had represented the Amritsar East constituency but quit to pave way for her husband. Navjot Kaur had late last year quit the BJP and joined the Congress.

The BJP, on the other hand, has pitted Rajesh Hani against Sidhu from the seat.

The ruling SAD-BJP is locked in a tough battle with Congress and AAP, which has emerged as a formidable third force in the state.

The state will go to polls on February 4. Results will be declared on March 11.
