New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from East Delhi Maheish Girri today called off his hunger strike against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal after Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited the site and persuaded him to do so.
Girri was on an indefinite hunger strike outside Kejriwal's residence since Sunday in protest against the CM’s allegations that he was involved in the murder of a senior NDMC employee.
The Home minister promised Girri an impartial inquiry into Kejriwal's allegations in the MM Khan murder case.
“I have come here to request Maheish Girri ji to end his fast,” the Home Minister said.
Before ending the strike, Girri reiterated his challenge to Kejriwal. “I challenged Arvind Kejriwal for debate, its been 3 days. He didn't turn up so its their loss. I'm going to end my hunger strike today,” he said.
The BJP MP from East Delhi sat on a protest against Kejriwal after the AAP leader did not take up his challenge of "open debate" over his allegations concerning murder of MM Khan.
Khan’s daughter had on Monday urged Girri to end his hunger strike and urged Kejriwal not to politicise the issue of her father’s death, but the MP had refused to budge.
Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, BJP’s Delhi unit President Satish Upadhyay and several other leaders had joined the hunger strike led by Girri.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal has urged the Delhi Police to probe the relationship between Girri and hotelier Ramesh Kakkar, the main accused in the murder of MM Khan in mid-May.
Last week, the Delhi Police gave a clean chit to Girri and NDMC vice-chairman Karan Singh Tanwar in the murder case.
Khan, 58, was shot dead outside his house in south Delhi's Jamia Nagar on May 16. The NDMC, on the directions of the Home Ministry, had offered a job to Khan's wife on compassionate grounds.
