Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping will on October 15 hold bilateral talks ahead of the BRICS Summit in Goa. The half-an-hour long meeting between the two leaders is slated for 5:40 pm.

The meeting between two sides is crucial because it comes exactly a fortnight after China’s repeated opposition in the United Nations Security Council to India’s bid to declare Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar an international terrorist.

The Prime Minister is likely to raise the issue with Jinping and seek his country’s cooperation in designating Azhar a UN-branded terrorist.

PM Modi is also likely to discuss India’s bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). At the NSG plenary in Seoul, China had opposed India’s inclusion in the 48-member club.

China had earlier this week said that it was ‘ready’ for talks with India on the latter’s entry into the NSG. However, it had defended its stand on extending a hold on New Delhi’s bid for a United Nations ban on Azhar.

Earlier in June, Prime Minister Modi had urged Beijing to consider India’s NSG case favourably, but the latter rebuffed India’s request at the NSG plenary in Seoul.
