Patna: There appears to be no stopping of criminal activities in Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar’s Bihar. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the law and order situation in the state is getting worse with each passing day.

In the latest incident that questions Nitish’s claim of ‘Mangal Raj’ (rule of law), a newly elected Mukhiya (Panchayat head) was shot dead by assailants in broad daylight. The incident occurred in the Chief Minister’s home district Nalanda.

The victim, identified as Poonam Devi, was recently elected Mukhiya of Harnaut region. According to police, the incident took place when Devi was on her way to Harnaut market.

Police said that assailants, said to be at least three in number, fired at her and escaped.

Devi died on the spot after being hit by five bullets, police said, hinting at personal vendetta being the reason behind this killing.

In another incident reported from West Champaran’s Motihari, eight unidentified motorcycle-borne armed criminals stormed into a jewellery shop and looted jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore at Kami Tola locality under town police station limits.

District Superintendent of Police (SP), Siddharth Mohan Jain said out of the eight unidentified miscreants, four stormed into the jewellery shop and looted ornaments and gold biscuits worth over Rs 1 crore at gunpoint.

Several employees and customers were present inside the showroom when the criminals barged in.

Four entered the showroom, while four others kept a watch from outside, the SP said.

The police have sealed all border areas and a massive search operation has been launched to nab the culprits, Jain added.
