Petrol bombs were hurled at the house of Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Naeem Akhtar in Parraypora area of the city last night.

Akhtar and his wife were not present in the premises at the time of incident, police said, adding that they have shifted to high security Gupkar Road after the PDP-BJP government was sworn in March last year.

Confirming the news, Akhtar said, “The house is unguarded… two petrol bombs were thrown at the house. No one was present when it took place and no one was injured in the incident, but minor damages were reported. One bomb fell inside the compound...The fire was doused by neighbours.”

Police said that no one was hurt in the attack that was carried out by unidentified persons.

"A petrol bomb was hurled at the residence of the Education Minister at Parraypora late last night, causing damage to the main gate of the house," a police official said.

A petrol bomb was also hurled at the office of Road and Buildings department at SDA colony in Bemina area of the city last night.

Kashmir has been on the boil since the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani by security forces in south Kashmir. His death sparked violent protests in the Valley that killed more than 50 people and wounded thousands.

Last month, protesters had burnt a PDP leader’s house in southern Kashmir. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti too faced protests last week when she was surrounded by girl students at a Srinagar college and shouted slogans demanding ‘azadi (freedom)’.
