Paying tributes to Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on his 60th death anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India will always be thankful to Babasaheb for his rich service to the nation.
"I bow to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his Nirvan Divas. India will always be thankful to Babasaheb for his rich service to the nation," he said in a tweet.
The Prime Minister also paid floral tributes to Dr Ambedkar at a function in Parliament.
Dr BR Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, was the architect of the Indian constitution.
On 29 August 1947, Dr Ambedkar was made the Chairman of the Drafting Committee set up to prepare a draft Constitution for India.
DR Ambedkar, as head of the Drafting Committee, ensured that the Indian Constitution provided constitutional guarantees and protections for a wide range of civil liberties for individual citizens, including freedom of religion, the abolition of untouchability, and the outlawing of all forms of discrimination.
He also successfully persuaded the Constituent Assembly to agree for introducing a system of reservations of jobs in the civil services, schools and colleges for members of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
