New Delhi: Probably for the first time in India, a political party has been served legal notice over tweets posted on its official website.
According to a report in The Economic Times, a legal notice has been served to the Congress party, its president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi alleging that some tweets posted on the official handle of the party has defamed Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The notice has been served by the grandnephew Savarkar.
"Yes, we have sent the notice of defamation to the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. This is pertaining to the official Twitter handle of INC which calls Savarkar traitor," Hitesh Jain, the lawyer for the Savarkar family, was quoted as saying by The Economic Times.
The report further says that The notice refers to tweets on the Congress handle on March 5, 22 and 23, in "pictorial forms/posters along with comments on the said posters, calling late Shri Vinayak Damodar Savarkar a 'traitor'."
