Varanasi: After its resounding victory in Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shifted focus to the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh due next year.

As part of its plan to woo the dalits ahead of 2017 polls, BJP president Amit Shah will today have meal with a dalit family in one of the village in Sevapuri Assembly segment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency.

On his way to Allahabad from the Varanasi Airport today, Shah will make a small halt at Jogiyapur village in Sevapuri Assembly segment to share a meal with a dalit family.

BJP's Eastern UP Media-Incharge Sanjay Bhardwaj informed that Shah will share the afternoon meal in the village with Girjaprasad Bind and Ikbal Bind's family, who belongs to the dalit community.

The move is being seen as the BJP's bid to woo most backward caste voters.

Shah is also schedule address a kisan rally in Allahabad where he will be highlighting the NDA government’s pro-poor and pro-farmers schemes.

Recently, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who hails from Chandauli district, had made a appeal to the people of state to give a clear majority and form a BJP government.

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP, in a spectacular performance, had won a whopping 71 out of 80 seats. The party had, however, won just 47 seats in the 2012 assembly polls.

The BJP’s vote share was 42 per cent in the last Lok Sabha polls as against 15 per cent in the Assembly polls in 2012.

The BJP last shared power in UP with Mayawati in 2002.
