Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Thursday reiterated that his party National Conference (NC) will not take part in the upcoming Panchayat polls.

“An election which won't see people's participation is considered to be an election by Centre, what can we say? We haven't asked people to not participate or boycott the elections, we have just said that our party won't take part in it,” ANI quoted Abdullah, as saying.

Meanwhile, dismissing speculations that the upcoming municipal elections in the state are likely to be deferred, state Chief Secretary B.V.R. Subrahmanyam on Wednesday said that these polls will be held as per schedule.

The J&K Chief Secretary’s remarks came amid reports that the civic and Panchayat polls may not be held as per schedule in view of two leading political parties of the state, NC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deciding to boycott these elections.

Congress party’s state president G.A. Mir also said that environment in the state was not conducive for the polls.

“The situation in the state isn’t conducive for holding municipal and Panchayat polls. The elections were announced without keeping in mind the ground situation,” he said.
