Guwahati: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today took on his successor Narendra Modi citing “failure” of his Pakistan policy and not delivering upon his promises of bringing back black money, among others.

Singh, who held the post of the PM for 10 years under the UPA rule, was addressing an election rally in poll-bound Assam’s capital city of Guwahati.

“Modiji made a promise that he will bring back black money and Rs 15 lakh each will be deposited in every citizen’s account. But the BJP government failed miserably in fulfilling such a big promise made to the people of India,” he said.

Singh also attacked Modi over his frequent foreign trips saying they have been inconsequential. “Modiji’s foreign tours are being presented as great achievements, but everyone knows that these foreign tours have resulted in nothing,” he said.

In the 2014 elections, the Congress-led government suffered its worst ever defeat over allegations of unbridled corruption. The 2014 elections also marked the end of Congress’ s dominance in post-independence India.

Singh’s criticism of Modi is in line with the party’s attacks on the Prime Minister. At the height of the election campaign prior to the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Modi took frequent digs at Singh over his characteristic silence.

This time around, Singh decided to give it back to him.

“There is a saying: doing is more important than talking. But Modiji has forgotten this basic mantra of life,” Singh said on Wednesday, in an apparent reference to PM Modi’s penchant for effective communication.
