New Delhi: In an apparent bid to silence critics of his much hyped marriage to journalist Amrita Rai, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh yesterday tweeted his wife’s decision to give up her claim on his property in favour of his son Jaivardhan Singh.

“My wife Amrita Rai has sacrificed her right in my family and earned property in favour of my son Jaivardhan. She stuck to her words,” Singh tweeted.

68-year-old Singh’s tweet is being seen as a reply to those who have criticised 44-year-old Rai for marrying the Congress leader in pursuit of money. Singh had also faced heat for marrying a woman much younger to him.

The marriage had even given ammunition to his opponents to launch public attacks against him on many occassions.

The couple confirmed their relationship in April 2014 and tied the knot in September last year as per Hindu rites in a solemn ceremony. At that time, Rai had said that she married Digvijaya for love and that she doesn’t have any interest in his property.

“I have married Digvijaya Singh for love. Therefore, I have already requested him to transfer all his property and belongings to his son and daughters. I only want to embark on this new journey with him, working towards a dignified, professional career,” Amrita had said.

Singh’s first wife Asha Singh died in February 2013 after battling cancer for several years. His son Jaivardhan Singh represents Raghogarh constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

This was also Amrita’s second marriage. She had ended her marriage with Anand Pradhan, professor at the reputed Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, few years ago.
