Following in the footsteps of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi has ordered cancellation of public holidays being observed to mark the birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities.

“The Delhi government has decided to annul the public holidays marking birth and death anniversaries of personalities. I have issued instruction to the Chief Secretary in this regard,” Delhi’s deputy CM Manish Sisodia tweeted.

In another tweet, the AAP leader heaped praise on the BJP government in UP saying ‘a government should learn from the examples set by others’.

“The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a very good initiative. We should always be ready to learn from other states,” he tweeted.

The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier this week cancelled 15 state-specific public holidays that were being observed to mark birth and death anniversaries of historical figures, political and religious leaders.

In Uttar Pradesh, government servants were entitled to a 180-odd holidays and leaves, meaning six months of holidays, including 104 weekends, 40 public holidays, restricted holidays, earned and medical leaves.

Nearly all of these holidays were declared in the last decade and a half.

At an event to mark the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar on April 14, CM Adityanath had expressed displeasure at the huge number of public holidays in the state.

On Centre’s decision banning use of red beacons by VIPs, he said the ‘decision barring the use of red beacons atop vehicles was inspired by the AAP government’.
