Cricketer Praveen Kumar on Sunday joined the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), months ahead of the scheduled Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
He was inducted by UP Chief Minister and state president of SP Akhilesh Yadav into the party.
"I have met CM and decided to join the party. I will do whatever is possible for the party," the right-arm medium-pace bowler said after meeting the CM.
He, however, refused to comment on whether he would contest elections next year.
"I am a kid in this field. As of now I will try to learn it," he said when asked if he would contest assembly elections.
It is speculated that Praveen may be fielded from his a Meerut assembly seat in his hometown.
29-year-old Kumar heaped praised on UP CM and said he has done a lot for sportsmen and big stadiums are under construction at Lucknow and Saifai.
Besides sports, the right-arm medium-pace bowler said, the chief minister has done a lot of work for all round development of the state.
Kumar, who plays for Uttar Pradesh cricket team in first class cricket, has been a part of the Indian cricket team in six test matches and 68 ODI's, where he has to his credit, 27 and 77 wickets respectively.
Praveen currently plays for the IPL team Gujarat Lions. He has been a part of the Indian cricket team and IPL teams including Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
