New Delhi: BJP president Amit Shah on Friday confirmed that there will be a reshuffle of ranks in the two-year-old cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, he did not specify any time and date for the development.

"There will be a cabinet reshuffle. But the date is not certain," Shah said responding to a query in this regard at a press conference held in the national capital today.

There has been speculation about a major reshuffle in the Union Cabinet for a while now. The Assembky elections that saw the BJP emerge as a victor in the north-eastern state of Assam is also a contributing factor behind the anticipated development.

Sarbananda Sonowal, who was Union Sports minister, has now taken over as the Chief Minister of Assam.

"Whenever there will be a reshuffle, political situation will be one of the dimensions of selection," Shah said.

Meanwhile, the BJP is also learnt to be focussing on the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 11. The party’s trusted lieutenants are also said to be seriously involved in finalising the list of the party’s candidates.

58 of the 245 seats are to be filled and several ministers including Venkaiah Naidu, Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal among others will he looking for a re-election.

The BJP hopes to bring 18 members to the Rajya Sabha, up from its current tally of 14. Congress, on the other hand, could see its numbers deplete from 64 on account of losses in state elections.
