7. On 18th December, 1987 Benazir Bhutto married a wealthy businessman Asif Ali Zardari. They were considered an incompatible match.

This marriage had been arranged by her mother. Asif often sent her roses after their marriage had been finalsed.

He even gave her a heart-shaped ring of sapphire and diamond. Benazir met Asif for the first time only five days before their engagement. There was much speculation on how a westernized girl like her could be comfortable with an arranged marriage.

Even at this point Benazir displayed her boldness and strength as she opted to keep her name.

She said, “Benazir Bhutto doesn't cease to exist the moment I get married. I am not giving myself away. I belong to myself and I always shall.”

These words from a Muslim girl of an orthodox Muslim nation came across very powerfully. When she returned to Pakistan she was greeted by such a huge crowd that it took her motorcade almost 9 and half hours to travel a distance of just 8 miles from the Airport to Lahore where she was to address a rally.
