In 1985, he became the chief minister of Punjab. In 1988, after Benazir Bhutto's election as the President, Sharif took over as the leader of opposition.

Consequently, after two years, when Benazir was dismissed from her post over corruption charges, Nawaz Sharif became the Prime Minister in 1990.
