He began his working life as a business consultant, before founding Bain Capital, which under his leadership grew to aid over 100 household name businesses including Staples.
In 1994, Romney made his move into the political arena when he attempted to unseat veteran Democratic senator Ted Kennedy. He lost the battles but did succeed in raising his profile among Republicans.
In 1999 he was picked as head of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In the year of the Games he was then elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2002.
