Joko Widodo: From 'son of a wood-seller' to 'Indonesian President'

India TV News Desk [Published on:25 Jul 2014, 5:35 PM]

Jokowi is known to be a big proponent of technology and he has promised to implement e-governance as a way of reducing corruption in the bureaucracy. Bureaucratic inertia and red-tapism are two major problems that Indonesia is facing.

It was Megawati Sukarnoputri, the chairwoman of Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), forwarded Jokowi's name for presidential elections and withdrew her own name.

After election results were announced, Widodo said that as he was raised under the authoritarian and corrupt New Order, he had never expected someone with a lower-class background to become president of Indonesia.
