But that very year, the Conservatives won the elections led by David Cameron. Their success was unexpected; hence he seized the opportunity to take jibe at the older members of the party who had ridiculed his way of handling the campaigns. Thereafter he was made the Special Adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Norman Lamont.

Norman Lamont was sacked the following year in March 1993. Cameron was recruited by Home Secretary Michael Howard to work for him primarily in a media relations role.

In 1994, Cameron left politics to work as the director of corporation affairs at Carlton Communications, a British media company. Cameron resigned as Director of Corporate Affairs in February 2001 in order to fight for election to Parliament.
