NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore embarked on their return journey to Earth Tuesday, departing from the International Space Station (ISS) after an extended nine-month stay.

Sunita Williams, along with astronaut Butch Wilmore, were on a Boeing Starliner spacecraft to test its maiden crewed voyage in June 2024 and went on space expedition for around a week. Boeing Starliner suffered propulsion issues and was deemed unfit by the space administration to fly the duo astronauts back to Earth.

After over nine months, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore successfully undocked from the International Space Station Tuesday to begin their 17-hour journey back to Earth. The four-person crew on board SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft NASA is now prepping up for splashdown off the coast of Florida early Wednesday, 3:57 am IST.
The Dragon spacecraft has physically separated from the International Space Station, marking a major milestone in the Crew-9 mission’s return journey. The hatch was closed at 8:15 am IST on Tuesday, and astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are now on track, and is expected to splash down off the coast of Florida at approximately at 3:27 am IST on Wednesday.

Williams worked in Moscow with the Russian Space Agency on the Russian contribution to the space station and with the first Expedition Crew. Following the return of Expedition 1, Williams worked within the Robotics branch on the station’s Robotic Arm and the follow-on Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator. As a NEEMO2 crew member, she lived underwater in the Aquarius habitat for 9 days.
