The match in November 2008 at the VCA also saw former India captain MS Dhoni get the nods of the Indian team on permanent basis in the Test format. Anil Kumble who was the skipper of the side until the third Test announced his retirement from the game before the Nagpur Test.

The match also saw recently retired Murali Vijay make his Test debut having being drafted in as a replacement for Gautam Gambhir. The Delhi-batter was suspended for the match having thrown an elbow at Shane Watson in the Delhi Test.

Interestingly, not at VCA, the Aussies also have happy memories from Nagpur having clinched the Test series 2-0 in 2004. This was the first time in 35 years that the Baggy Green had beaten India in India. Australia beat India in the third Test and therefore won the series before losing the final encounter in Mumbai.

In one of the dark memories at the stadium, India lost to South Africa in the final over in the ODI World Cup 2011. The defeat was India’s only at the World Cup and would later go on to win the whole thing beating Sri Lanka in the final.
