During train journeys, many passengers do not prefer the food served on board. They feel that the food provided in trains is not entirely vegetarian and hygienic. Passengers believe that proper cleanliness is not maintained during food preparation and that vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes are not cooked separately.

The Sattvik Council of India launched the 'Sattvik' certification scheme along with IRCTC in 2021.
