Ayushman Bharat Scheme in Delhi: Free healthcare for residents? Benefits explained | In pics
The newly-formed BJP government in Delhi has announced the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), offering free healthcare to eligible residents. The BJP has also proposed increasing the benefit to Rs 10 lakh per family per year.
With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking charge of the government in Delhi for almost 27 years, many new policies and schemes of welfare are likely to be launched in the capital. One of them is the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), which was not accessible to Delhi citizens earlier.

BJP's pre-poll promise: Prior to the elections, BJP had made a commitment in its manifesto that if it were to assume power, the Ayushman Bharat scheme would be introduced in Delhi. Not only that, the party had also promised a double advantage for the people of the capital.

Under the current Ayushman Bharat program, the beneficiaries all over India are given free medical care up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually. BJP, however, has suggested raising this threshold to Rs 10 lakh for people living in Delhi so that they have access to superior healthcare facilities.

The Central Government has established eligibility criteria for the scheme, which primarily focuses on economically weaker sections. The scheme benefits will be availed by only those individuals who fulfill the criteria under the scheme when it is rolled out in Delhi.
