Born on October 17, 1955, actress Smita Patil was one of the most talented artists in the film industry. She died at the age of 31, soon after she gave birth to her son Prateik.

Other than being an exceptional actress, she broke many stereotypes including having a fair-skinned heroine in films. With her dusky complexion, she ruled many hearts.

Before becoming an actress, Smita Patil faced the camera in 1970 as a newsreader. She worked at Mumbai Doordarshan.

Along with ruling hearts as an actress, Smita Patil was actively involved in social activities for women's advancement. She was also a member of the Women's Centre in Mumbai.

Her characters also endorsed women's empowerment. She received National Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Bhumika for the kind of role she played on the big screen.

While it is said that Smita Patil died due to complications during childbirth, director Mrinal Sen after two decades of her death claimed that she died of medical negligence.
