Ace Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan started her career as a background dancer at the age of three. She got her first break as an independent choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam in 1974. She has been in the industry for over four decades and has choreographed many popular songs.
Born as Nirmala, she made her name in Bollywood as Saroj Khan and worked with all the top actors and directors of her time. The three-time National Award winner has been credited with choreographing over 2000 songs, including iconic numbers such as Hawa Hawai from Mr India (1987), Ek Do Teen from Tezaab (1988), Dhak Dhak Karne Laga from Beta (1992) and Dola Re Dola from Devdas (2002).
Saroj Khan learned dancing while working under choreographer B. Sohanlal and later switched to choreography herself. She received acclaim in 1987 when she choreographer actress Sridevi in Hawa Hawai song from Mr India.
Saroj Khan got married to B. Sohanlal when she was just 13. He was already married then. In an interview earlier, Khan has shared that she used to be in school when B. Sohanlal tied a black thread in her neck and she got married.
Saroj Khan has always claimed that actress Madhuri Dixit has been her favorite student. The choreographer-actor duo has always shared a very close bond and has worked in many films together. Khan had said, "We have a beautiful journey together and Madhuri was the best student I have ever come across."
Saroj Khan and actress Madhuri Dixit first worked together in Subhas Ghai's Uttar Dakshin. Then came the iconic number Ek Do Teen. Khan had said, "Ek Do Teen was the best performance of Madhuri and it establishes her as a dancer."
From all yesteryear to new generation actresses, Saroj Khan has worked with all the superstars in Bollywood. There is hardly anyone who hasn't expressed their desired to get choreographer by Masterji once in their life.
Other than choreographing in Bollywood films, Saroj Khan also judged reality show Nach Baliye in 2005. She appeared on the second season of the show as well and later judged the show Ustaadon Ka Ustaad. She also appeared in the 2008 show Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan.
