Padma Awards: Musical maestro AR Rahman was honoured with Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2000. For the unversed, it is India's fourth-highest civilian award, given to recognise distinguished service in any field. Rahman received Padma Bhushan (third-highest civilian award) from then President Pratibha Patil in 2010.

National Awards: AR Rahman has 7 Nation Film Awards to date. He received his first for Best Music Direction in 1992 for the Tamil film Roja (Tamil), followed by in 1996 for Minsara Kanavu (Tamil). He also won a National Award for the Bollywood film Lagaan in 2001. It was followed by Kannathil Muthamittal (Tamil) in 2002 and Kaatru Veliyidai (Tamil) in 2017. He also won the National Award for Best Background Score for the Bollywood film Mom in the same year. Rahman won his last National Award in 2022 for Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Tamil).

Oscars: AR Rahman, who turned 58 today has two Oscars. He bagged two Academy Awards in 2009 in Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories for the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire. He was also nominated for Best Original Score in 2011's Oscar Awards for the British independent biographical adventure film 127 Hours.

Other International Awards: Rahman not only won the Oscars but also dominated international awards in 2009 with his earnest creation of the Slumdog Millionaire music album and especially its superhit song Jai Ho. He won his first Bafta Award in 2009 in the Best Original Score category. He also won the Golden Globe Award in the same year for the same category. In 2010, Rahman won two Grammy Awards in Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category for Slumdog Millionaire.

Indian Awards: Rahman has won 15 Filmfare Awards for Best Music Direction so far. This list includes several superhit films like Jodha Akhbar, Rockstar, Dil se, Taal and Rang De Basanti among others. He also has 17 Filmfare Awards South and 8 IFFA Awards to date.

State Award: AR Rahman is also the recipient of six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and has fifteen Filmfare Awards and sixteen Filmfare Awards South for his music. He also received a Kalaimamani (highest civilian award in the state of Tamil Nadu) in 1995. He was presented with Awadh Samman by the governments of Uttar Pradesh in 2001 and the National Lata Mangeshkar Award from the government of Madhya Pradesh in 2004.

He was honored by Stanford University in 2006 for his contributions to world music. Rahman was named the "Indian of the Year for Contribution to Popular Music" in the Limca Book of Records the following year. In 2008, the Rotary Club of Madras presented him with the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award.
