Heavy rains in Mizoram triggered a landslide that led to the partial collapse of the newly constructed Kawnpui Railway Station on Wednesday. No casualties were reported. The state has been experiencing severe weather since August 20, causing landslides in several districts. In response, schools in Aizawl, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Mamit have been closed as a precaution.

Kawnpui Railway Station collapse

A landslide, brought on by torrential rains, caused the partial collapse of the under-construction Kawnpui Railway Station in Mizoram. According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, the incident occurred on August 28, with no reported casualties. The state has been grappling with continuous heavy rainfall, leading to landslides in various regions.

Weather disruptions across Mizoram

In light of the severe weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts continued light showers and cloudy skies in the coming days. The incessant rainfall has prompted the Mizoram government to close schools in four districts—Aizawl, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Mamit—as a safety measure. Landslides and mudslides have already been reported in Aizawl and surrounding areas.

Impact on schools and infrastructure

Schools in several districts have been closed due to the adverse weather, with authorities citing the risk of landslides as the primary concern. Last week, schools were also shut down in Aizawl, Kolasib, and Siaha districts due to similar weather conditions. Landslides have disrupted key roads across the state, though no casualties have been reported in these incidents.

Statewide impact of natural calamities

Since March, Mizoram has faced significant natural calamities, including landslides, which have claimed at least 42 lives. The state disaster management and rehabilitation department continues to monitor and address these challenges as heavy rains persist.
