The Manipur Police on Monday (September 2) reported that suspected militants believed to be behind yesterday's attack in Koutruk village burned at least five abandoned houses there before being chased away by officials.

"Five abandoned houses were burned by the militants. The residents had fled their homes after the gun and bomb attack that began around 2:30 pm on Sunday. The militants were pushed back by security forces on Sunday night," an official said.

Notably, two persons, including a woman, were killed and nine others injured on September 1 after suspected militants indiscriminately fired from hilltops into the low-lying valley areas of Koutruk and neighboring Kadangband from Sunday afternoon. The attack, which involved snipers and bombs dropped by drones, led to widespread panic among residents, forcing women, children, and the elderly to flee to safer areas. While, the suspected militants managed to reach the outskirts of Koutruk village, where they set fire to five houses.

About the Koutruck village

Significantly, Koutruk is a Meitei village located in Imphal West district, close to the border with the Kuki-Zomi majority Kangpokpi district. Since the ongoing conflict escalated, the village has been reported as one of the worst-affected areas, with recurring incidents of gunfire.

Attack marks a significant escalation

Meanwhile, regarding Sunday’s attack, the Manipur Police said, "In an unprecedented attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, alleged Kuki militants have deployed numerous RPGs using high-tech drones. While drone bombs have commonly been used in general warfare, this recent deployment of drones to deploy explosives against security forces and civilians marks a significant escalation. The involvement of highly trained professionals, possibly with technical expertise and support, cannot be ruled out. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the police are prepared to respond to any contingency that may arise."

"Furthermore, one civilian identified as Ngangbam Surbala (31 years old) succumbed to bullet injuries sustained in the attack, while her 8-year-old daughter was injured on her arm. Additionally, two police personnel and three civilians sustained injuries in the ongoing incident. Police appeal to the general public to maintain restraint. Combing operations are ongoing to flush out any inimical elements," the statement added.
