In yet another such incident, a third-year Computer Science student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in his hostel room on Monday (September 9). The deceased, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was found in his room at the Brahmaputra Hostel. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the body has been sent for a postmortem examination, according to an official. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, the police said.

This is the fourth death of a student in IIT-Guwahati (IITG) this year. On August 9, a female student was allegedly found hanging in her room. As the news of the death spread, a section of students gathered in front of the administration building, demanding justice for the deceased and necessary mental health support for those studying at IITG. “The deceased student was suffering from physical health issues and was disturbed mentally. He was undergoing treatment and unable to concentrate on his studies,” a protesting student claimed.

Protests over student’s death

Protesters at the IITG alleged that despite the student submitting the necessary medical certificates, they were disregarded, leading to further deterioration in his mental health. Following the tragic incident, the Dean of Students' Welfare engaged in talks with the agitating students, assuring them that the physical and mental well-being of all students is the institute’s top priority. The dean emphasised the institute's commitment to addressing concerns related to student welfare and mental health support.

IITG issues statement

“IITG is deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” a spokesperson of the institute stated. The well-being of students is the top priority of IITG and it is committed to providing support and resources to help students navigate the challenges they may face, he said.
