Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (July 29) issued comprehensive directives to District Commissioners, emphasizing that no unnecessary expenditure should be made on any government function in the state. Speaking at the two-day District Commissioners' Conference in Guwahati, Sarma instructed officials to keep government functions simple and solemn, mandating that only vegetarian or satwik food be served at all government events.

“DCs have been asked to keep government functions simple and solemn. Only veg food must be served in all government functions or whenever there is a visit of the Chief Minister or Ministers,” the CM stated.

Significantly, the directive regarding vegetarian food follows the CM’s earlier reprimand of the Nalbari District Commissioner for disregarding instructions to serve a simple vegetarian meal at a cabinet meeting, opting instead for a lavish spread. Sarma had then expressed his displeasure in a formal letter addressed to Varnali Deka, the District Commissioner of Nalbari, for not adhering to the directive.

'Know about the other directions issued'

It is pertinent to note that, in addition to food guidelines, Sarma also outlined measures to end VIP culture, including reducing the number of vehicles and barricades associated with the Chief Minister's security. “In case of the Chief Minister’s visit to a district, the cavalcade should not consist of more than 10 cars, including those of the DC and the SP,” he added.

Further, Sarma also urged the DCs to transform their districts into the fulcrum of administration to ensure the efficient disbursal of benefits. He stated, a core team at the state level will support the DCs in delegating tasks to sub-districts. He further also directed DCs to visit and supervise the construction of government buildings within their jurisdictions and to actively participate in the district's development processes.

Moreover, Sarma also added that the DCs should emphasize the areas and sectors in which their respective districts excel so that each district can contribute to the state's growth.
