Following Ratan Tata's passing at the age of 86, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound sorrow, stating that the state has lost one of its most dedicated supporters. Tata, honoured with Assam's highest civilian award, 'Asom Baibhav,' held a special place in the hearts of the people.
Sarma described Tata’s legacy as one characterized by compassion, statesmanship, and an unwavering belief in India's potential for growth. “In his demise, the people of Assam have lost one of their biggest well-wishers,” he stated.
Tata’s commitment to Assam was demonstrated through several key initiatives, including the establishment of the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, which aims to enhance healthcare services in the state. Additionally, he played a crucial role in launching a semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, a project poised to generate significant employment opportunities for the youth.
Reflecting on his personal interactions with Tata, Sarma noted that each meeting left him with valuable insights. His most recent visit to Tata in Mumbai was to express gratitude for the semiconductor project, which underscores Tata's confidence in Assam’s industrial capabilities. "His simplicity and humility are qualities I will never forget. His passing creates a void that cannot be filled,” Sarma remarked, extending his condolences to the Tata family and the nation.
Earlier this year, Tata shared his enthusiasm for the Tata Group's investment in the semiconductor sector through a post on X (formerly Twitter). The group has committed Rs 27,000 crore to establish a chip manufacturing facility in Jagiroad, aiming to position Assam as a significant player in this vital industry while also improving cancer care in the region. “This new development will put Assam on the global map,” he stated, acknowledging the support of Chief Minister Sarma.
Alongside the semiconductor plant, Tata Group, in collaboration with the Assam government, has also established several cancer care hospitals across the state. The semiconductor facility is expected to produce 48 million chips daily, serving various sectors including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for three semiconductor facilities, highlighting the importance of this sector for India's future. Two of these plants will be situated in Gujarat, while one will be in Assam, with Tata Group responsible for two of the developments. Although the semiconductor industry in India is still developing, this investment marks a significant step towards achieving self-reliance and modernization.
"The decisions and policies of today will provide us with a strategic advantage in the future," PM Modi remarked, reaffirming the government's commitment to making India a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. The anticipated start of chip production at these facilities is set for 2026, signalling a new chapter for the region and the nation.
As Assam reflects on Ratan Tata's remarkable contributions, it is evident that his vision and dedication to development have left a lasting imprint on the state, shaping its future for generations to come.
