Days after massive protests erupted in Assam’s Nagaon district over the rape of a 14-year-old girl from the Dhing area, the Assam Police on Friday (September 6) confirmed that the remaining two accused, who had been on the run, have surrendered.

The police said, amid the massive search operation to apprehend the suspects was laid, their families had informed authorities of their (accused) intention to surrender. "Both have surrendered today (September 6). We are now interrogating them. We will take action as per law. We will arrest them. Procedures are going on," Nagaon SP Swapneel Deka said.

"Tomorrow we will produce them before the court and will seek remand. We were searching for them following the incident and the family members told us that they wanted to surrender. Today they surrendered," he added.

It is pertinent to note that protests have intensified in Assam with the masses demanding immediate arrest of the victim in connection to the incident, which saw a 14-year-old girl from the Dhing area allegedly gang-raped by three accused as she was returning home on her bicycle from tuition late last month.

According to available information, the police said, the three assailants, who were allegedly on a motorcycle, surrounded her, raped her, before abandoning her injured and unconscious by a roadside pond. She was later rescued by locals who informed the police.

Significantly, while the police had earlier arrested the prime accused in connection to the tragic incident, the latter died due to drowning. The police said the accused, who was arrested late last month earlier, was being taken to the location where the incident occurred to recreate the crime scene. However, in an attempt to flee the policy custody, he jumped a pond and subsequently drowned.

"But the accused escaped from police custody and jumped into the pond. A search operation was immediately launched, and his body was recovered nearly two hours later," the police added.
