Assam flood: The flood situation in Assam continued to be critical on Saturday, with six more people losing their lives and nearly 2.4 million affected, an official bulletin said. This brings the total death toll from this year's floods, landslides, and storms in Assam to 70.
The flood has affected several districts, including Cachar, Kamrup, Dhubri, Nagaon, Goalpara, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Karimganj, and Tinsukia.
According to the bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the devastating floods claimed the lives of two persons in Charaideo and one each in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts.
A total of 23,96,648 people across 29 districts have been affected by the floods, with 68,768.5 hectares of cropland submerged. The worst-hit districts include Dhubri, affecting 7,97,918 people; Cachar, with 1,75,231 people affected; and Darrang, where 1,63,218 people are impacted. A total of 53,429 people have taken shelter in 577 relief camps.
Rahul Gandhi on Assam flood
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed concern over the flood situation in Assam and urged the Central and state governments to expeditiously extend all possible support to those affected.
In a post on X, Gandhi said, "The flood situation in Assam is becoming increasingly dangerous. My thoughts are with our brothers and sisters reeling under the deluge. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I appeal to Congress leaders and workers to provide help in rescue and rehabilitation operations," the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said.
"I urge the Central and state governments to compassionately and expeditiously extend all possible support to those affected," he said.
Assam CM visits flood-affected areas
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited flood-affected areas of Dibrugarh district and took stock of the situation. Sarma assured the people to take remedial measures once the flood water recedes.
Brahmaputra river flowing above the danger marks
The Brahmaputra River was flowing above danger levels at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Goalpara, and Dhubri. Its tributaries, including Burhi Dihing at Chenimari, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing, and Kopili at Dharamtul and Sankosh in Golakganj, were also above danger levels. The Barak River exceeded the danger mark at AP Ghat, BP Ghat, and Kushiyara in Karimganj town.
In total, 15,49,161 animals have been affected by the floods. The devastating second wave has claimed the lives of 114 wild animals. The flood has also damaged 126 roads and two bridges.
