Brussels: Formation of a new government in Yemen is a critical step in efforts for transition, the EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, has said.
"The announcement of the formation of a new and inclusive government under the leadership of Prime Minister Khaled Bahah is a critical step to make headway in much needed economic and political reforms towards the successful conclusion of the transition," Xinhua quoted her as saying in a statement Saturday.
Mogherini, who is EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said it was now important for all political actors to engage constructively to support the new cabinet to implement decisive reforms for the benefit of all Yemenis, and take action to improve fiscal sustainability and fight corruption in the public administration.
"The EU is committed to continue supporting Yemen in its transition," she said, calling on the Constitutional Drafting Committee to quickly deliver a draft Constitution.
Earlier Friday, Yemen, the Gulf of Aden country locked in political turmoil due to clashes between rival factions, announced the formation of the new government after weeks of unsuccessful attempts.
Key players, including the Houthi rebels, had signed an agreement last Saturday, mandating the president and prime minister to form the new government.
