Washington: A letter from one of the survivors of the Titanic ship will be auctioned next week in the US.
The ship had drowned on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg.
This letter was written by Duff Gordon, a British aristocrat to a friend a month after the horrifying incident in 1912.
Few lines of Lady Lucy's two paged letter went as follows:
”How kind of you to send me a cable of sympathy from New York on our safety.
”According to the way we've been treated by England on our return we didn't seem to have done the right thing in being saved at all!!!! Isn't it disgraceful.”
New England auction house RR Auctionthat often handles Titanic memorabilia, said that the letter could fetch as much as $6,000 at the live auction in Boston on January 22.
The sale will follow a week of online bidding.
Lady Lucy and her husband Sir Cosmo Duff Gordan were the only passengers called to give a testimony before an inquiry conducted by the British Wreck Commissioner in London in 2012.
The couple was traveling on first class on the Titanic from Southampton to New York.
After the Titanic was sinking, as was later revealed, their lifeboat carried only 12 people, including seven crew members, despite having room for 40 souls.
The couple was criticized for their snobbish act. They allegedly bribed the crew so not to go back to rescue others. However these allegations were never proved.
Around 1,500 died when the Titanic drowned on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg.
