New Delhi: Aviation has brought the people of the world closer to one another. Every day thousands of flights originate and land in most of the cities of the world, and yet occasionally there are air disasters. Turkish airlines cargo plane disaster of 1974: In 1974, 346 people had died in France after the cargo door of a Douglas DC-10 plane operated by Turkish airlines fortuitously opened up mid-air.2. KLM and Pan Am crash of 1977: In 1977, 583 people lost their lives when two Boeing 747s (KLM and Pan Am) collided on a runway in Tenerife in the most terrible accident in the history of aviation.3. American Airlines disaster of 1979: In 1979, 273 people died after an engine fell off a McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 operated by American Airlines after takeoff from Chicago.4. Air New Zealand collision of 1979: Again in 1979, 257 lives were lost when a McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 operated by Air New Zealand collided with Mount Erebus in Antarctica all through a sightseeing tour.5. Saudi Arabian plane crash of 1980: Nearly 301 people died in Saudi Arabia on the runway following a fire broke out aboard a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. One more reason was delayed evacuation.6. Nigeria Airways crash of 1991: 261 people died after a Nationair DC-8-61 hired by Nigeria Airways to carry pilgrims to Mecca crashed after taking off from Saudi Arabia when a tire failure sparked a fire onboard.8. Mid-Air Collision of 1996: In 1996, 349 people lives lost after a mid-air clash over India between a Boeing 747 operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines and a Soviet-era Ilyushin-76 plane operated by Air Kazahkstan.10. American Airlines crash of 2001: In 2001, more than 265 people lost their lives after the tail fin of an Airbus A300 broke just after takeoff in New York causing the plane to collapse into the Queens neighbourhood of New York City.
