New Delhi: A strong earthquake measuring 5.6 on Richter Scale jolted buildings in eastern Japan, including the capital Tokyo, on Tuesday.
According to Japan's Meteorological Agency, the earthquake was centred in Ibaraki Prefecture, just northeast of Tokyo.
The depth of the earthquake was 50 km and there was no risk of a tsunami, it added.
Media reported that there were no reports of injuries but bullet train services in the area were partially suspended for few hours.
The operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, which was battered by a tsunami after a powerful undersea quake in 2011, said nothing unusual had been noted at the still-fragile site.
The Japan Atomic Power Co. said the Tokai No.2 Power Station, which was nearest to the epicentre of the quake, showed no signs of any problems.
Japan is hit by around a fifth of the world's powerful quakes every year and sits at the conjunction of several tectonic plates.
