Berlin, Mar 10: At least seven children and another person were killed Sunday in a fire that broke out at an apartment building in Germany, police said.
The fire started around 4.30 a.m. from the ground floor of the building and quickly spread to the floors above, Xinhua reported.
The building in Backnang town near Stuttgart was formerly a leather factory, police said.
The bodies of the victims were found on the ground floor.
Four people were rescued from a balcony by firefighters and three of them were hospitalised. A total of 13 people were registered as living in the building.
The cause of the fire was not clear, and there was no evidence of arson or xenophobic attack, police said.
Witnesses said an oven may have been the cause.
The identities of the victims were not known.
