Cairo, Feb 29: Senior al-Qaeda leader Saif al-Adel has been arrested at the Cairo airport in Egypt, media reports said on Wednesday.
According to reports, Adel travelled from Pakistan to Egypt via Dubai.
He was among those on the Most Wanted List of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with 5 million dollar bounty on his head and was hing ranking leaders of al-Qaeda leaders.
He was also expected to be new chief of al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden's demise but Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri was given the charge of global terror outfit.
The Egyptian, whose real name is Muhammad Ibrahim Makkawi, was once Osama Bin Laden's security chief and oversaw its military operations.
Adel whose real name is Muhammad Ibrahim Makkawi along with bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laen was allegedly held under house arrest by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after US led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Iran never acknowledged their presence.
