Bangkok: Five Thai university students have been detained by police and soldiers after giving a three-fingered salute inspired by “The Hunger Games” to junta leader-cum-prime minister in a daring move protest.

The students, wearing T-shirts showing the phrase “Don't Want a Coup,” stood in front of Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha while he spoke on a stage during a visit to Khon Kaen province on Wednesday.

They raised three fingers above their head, a symbol of resistance inspired by the Hollywood blockbuster, before security officers escorted them out.

Khon Kaen is the stronghold of former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

Lawyer Sasinan Thamnithinan says the five men were being questioned by soldiers but have not been charged.

The three-finger salute campaign began after the May 22 coup.
