Over 140 ceasefire violations have been reported this year, the highest in the past eight years, the Indian military said.

The latest firing occurred even though India's Director General of Military Operations Lt Gen Vinod Bhatia talked to his Pakistani counterpart Maj Gen Amir Riaz over phone yesterday.

The talks between the DGMOs followed an agreement between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif at their meeting in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

Tensions have simmered at the LoC since late August, when five Indian soldiers were killed in an attack by Pakistani troops.
