China state television on Saturday broadcast mobile phone footage which captured the boy's ordeal - and his rescue by neighbours and one brave man.
The boy was found dangling in the air from the window of a fourth floor apartment in Nanchang city, in east China's Jiangxi Province.
According to state TV, the boy was left at home alone at the time of the incident, and the door to the apartment was found to be locked.
Some neighbours held a spread-out quilt below ready to catch the boy in case he fell, while others tried to force open the apartment's door with crowbars.
Twenty minutes later, a man appeared from the fifth floor and climbed all the way down the side of the building until he reached the stuck boy.
He wasn't able to free the boy, but he did prevent him from falling.
It took another 20 minutes for neighbours to force open the door and pull the little boy up to safety.
Although the rescuer left without leaving his name, some people recognised him as Zheng Guorong, a dried food seller at a nearby market.
"I held him with some strength, he came around and cried, I comforted him," he said later that day.
Chinese state television reported the boy had been left at home unattended, while his grandmother went out to run some errands.
He's believed to have fallen through the window while playing alone near to it.
