Police said there were message boards along Interstate 77 warning drivers of severe fog.
The crashes happened mostly because drivers were going too fast, according to a police spokesperson.
Traffic backed up for about 13 kilometres in the southbound lanes, which is where the wrecks occurred.
Authorities also closed the northbound lanes so that emergency vehicles could get there.
