Washington/New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a hectic five-day tour in the US, addressing the UN General Assembly in Hindi on September 27, and a formal summit at the White House with US President Barack Obama on Sept 30, according to official sources.
Modi will reach New York on Sept 26, and will address the UN General Assembly the next day. The Indian Prime Minister will address the august gathering of nearly 200 world leaders in Hindi.
He will be following in the footsteps of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had addressed the UN in Hindi earlier.
Modi will be meeting world leaders on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session.
He will address a huge gathering of Indians at the Madison Square Garden on September 28 evening, before leaving for Washington.
The entry to the Madison Square Garden event will be through lottery. Though PM Modi has expressed his desire that the entry should be free, yet there are questions as to who would foot the bill.
407 organisations belonging to Indians and religious groups have joined hands to host the event.
On September 29, US President Obama will be hosting Modi to a private dinner in Washington. The next day, there will be the formal bilateral summit, and will be followed by lunch at the US State Department to be hosted by US Vice President Joe Biden.
The meeting with US President Obama will mark Modi's first visit to the US since his party swept to victory in general elections in May.
In 2005, the US State Department had revoked a visa that Modi had for travelling to the US in the wake of the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
He never applied for an American visa after the move.
Soon after his record electoral victory in the May general elections, Obama had called Modi personally and invited him for a meeting in September.
