Bangladesh offers 2 SEZs to Indian companies
With an aim to boost bilateral trade, Bangladesh has offered to establish two Special Economic Zones for Indian companies besides allowing Life Insurance Corporation to start operations in the country.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's talks with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina yesterday, both sides signed a number of pacts to spur economic engagement and enhance connectivity so that North East region could be linked to South Asian countries.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee an inspiration for many: PM Modi
Former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on Sunday conferred the Bangladesh Liberation War award for his contribution to the South Asian nation's fight for liberation from Pakistan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Bangladesh, received the award on behalf of Vajpayee from President Mohammad Abdul Hamid at a function in Dhaka.
“An inspiration for so many people like me, Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee is being honoured by Bangladesh,” Modi said in a speech on the occasion.
“If Atalji's health permitted and he was present here, this occasion would be very different,” Modi said.
“Every Indian wanted the dream of an independent Bangladesh to be realised,” he added.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted Vajpayee's contribution to her country's Liberation War.
“As a politician, Shri Vajpayee's unstinting support to Bangladesh played an important role in mobilising support for our cause,” she said.
PM Modi meets Bangladesh President
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called on Bangladesh President Mohammad Abdul Hamid at Bangabhawan in Dhaka.
“A warmth that brings two nations together. PM@narendramodi and President Abdul Hamid confer at Bangabhawan,” Vikas Swarup, spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry, tweeted.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar during the meeting.
PM Modi inaugurates Indian High Commission chancery
The Prime Minister visited the the newly-constructed Indian High Commission's chancery at Baridhara. He inaugurated the chancery and interacted with the people there.
He also planted a bakul sapling in the compound.
"Reaching out to Bangladesh directly. PM inaugurated 6 projects undertaken with grant in aid & interacts w/ beneficiaries," Vikas Swarup, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, tweeted.
The six projects are: the India-Bangladesh Maitri Girls Hostel, Victoria College, Narail; construction of third floor of Blind Education & Rehabilitation Development Organisation, Mirpur, Dhaka; sewage treatment plant snd waste water treatment plant, Kumudini Hospital, Mirzapur, Tangail; establishment of Hindi Department, Institute of Modern Languages, University of Dhaka; recording studio, Music Department, University of Dhaka and Assistance to Department of Dance, University of Dhaka.
PM Modi visits Dhaka Ramakrishna Mission Math
Modi visited the Ramkrishna Mission at Gopibagh and was greeted by the monks at the temple. He spoke to the senior monks and posed for pictures with the saffron-robed monks of the Ramakrishna order.
"Last month in Kolkata. This month in Dhaka. PM visits Ramakrishna Mission in Bangladesh," tweeted Swarup.
The Dhaka Ramakrishna Mission Math is a branch of the Belur Math, which Modi visited last month when he was in Kolkata.
PM Modi visits Dhakeshwari Temple
Prime Minister Narendra Modi started his second day in Bangladesh by visiting Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka.
"An early morning temple visit. PM @narendramodi worships at the Sree Sree Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted.
The temple is state-owned, giving it the distinction of being Bangladesh's "national temple". After offering prayers at the temple, Modi met members of the temple committee and other senior members at the temple.
Modi was offered a memento by the temple authorities.
Then he will go back to his hotel before leaving for Bangabhaban to meet President Md Abdul Hamid. He will receive the Award of Liberation War Honour on behalf of former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and attend a private lunch hosted by the President.
India, Bangladesh ratify historic land swap deal, ink 22 agreements
Yesterday, in a historic move, India and Bangladesh ratified an over 40-year-old land border swap agreement and flagged off two new trans-border buses - Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati. The land swap agreement envisages transfer of 111 enclaves with a total area of 17,160.63 acres to Bangladesh, while Dhaka is to transfer 51 enclaves with an area of 7,110.02 acres to India. A 6.1-km undefined border stretch will be demarcated.
The Indian Prime Minister held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina and announced a US 2 billion Line of Credit to Dhaka.
Both countries also inked 22 agreements, including renewing a bilateral trade agreement, an agreement on coastal shipping, on using of the Chittagong and Mongla ports, and prevention of smuggling and circulation of fake currency notes.
Modi had yesterday also visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to pay tribute to the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He also went to the National Martyrs' Memorial, or the Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho, to pay tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
