Statue of Liberty
Located on Liberty Island in Manhattan, United Stated, the Statue of Liberty, is a colossal neoclassical sculpture designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
The statue was a gift from the people of France to celebrate the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence dedicated on October 28, 1886.
The construction of the statue was completed in France in July 1884 and arrived in New York the following year.
Statue of Liberty features a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata with July 4, 1776 (the date of the American Declaration of Independence) inscribed on it a long with a broken chain that lies at her feet.
The statue stands as an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.
