There were no reports of injuries among the 71 people aboard.
Authorities say Flight 5124 landed around 6:20pm today, shortly after the pilot was approaching the airport to land as scheduled and noticed problem with the plane's front landing gear.
As the plane landed, the defunct landing gear collapsed under the weight of the aircraft, and the plane was later seen with its nose down on the runway.
Passengers were evacuated from the jet shortly after landing via the plane's inflated emergency chutes.
Newark firefighters were called to the scene, but found no smoke or fire aboard the plane.
Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the airport was closed shortly after the landing.
