Islamabad: At least 33 people, including 13 militants after Taliban gunmen stormed Pakistan Air Force (PAF) camp at Inqalab road in Peshawar's Badaber area early Friday.
Pakistan's army claimed that the Taliban killed 16 people inside a mosque during a brazen morning attack on an air base in the country's northwest.
The information was sketchy but the military says the attackers managed to break into a mosque inside the compound of the base, where worshippers were praying, and gunned down 16.
Spokesman Maj. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa says the "terrorists" entered the Badaber base from two different points on Friday, but that the attack was later repulsed, following a ferocious firefight with the troops there.
Thirteen militants have been killed by security forces, Director-General (DG) Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major-General Asim Bajwa said on Twitter.
Bajwa said 10 soldiers were injured during exchange of fire with terrorists, two of whom are officers.
Around a group of terrorists attempted to break into the air base camp. The terrorists had been engaged and contained around the guard room area of the camp, Bajwa said, the first major attack in several weeks.
Following the attack, a heavy contingent of the QRF reached the spot. Exchange of fire with the militants is ongoing. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police have cordoned off the area.
Bajwa also said, terrorists attacked the guard room at the camp early in the morning. The QRF reached the scene and surrounded the attackers, isolating them.
Peshawar has frequently been targeted by militants. Last December more than 150 people were killed when Taliban gunmen attacked an army-run school.
