Imam Husayn Shrine, Iraq

Located in the city of Karbala, Iraq, Imam Husayn Shrine is one of the oldest mosques of the world.

The shrine is built on grave of Husayn ibn Ali, the second grandson of Muhammad who was killed during the Battle of Karbalā in 680 C.E.

Imam Husayn Shrine is a holy site for Shias after Mecca and Madina.

Over millions of pilgrims visit the city ever year to observe Ashura, which marks the anniversary of Husayn ibn Ali's death.

Earlier, the grave of Husayn ibn Ali is enclosed within a cage-like structure beneath the golden dome, the process of replacing the cage like structure over the tomb of Husayn Ibn Ali on March 5, 2013.     

The boundary wall of the shrine surrounds wooden gates covered with glass decorations.
